Duʿā for your marriage

Praying for your spouse is one of the quietest, most powerful things you can do for a marriage — and one of the easiest to forget when life is busy.

Pray for them by name

There is a difference between praying for your marriage in general and praying for your spouse specifically — using their name, and asking Allah for exactly the thing you know they need this week.

When you do it honestly, something changes in you. It is difficult to hold resentment against someone you have just asked Allah to bless.

Not only when something is wrong

Most couples pray for each other during difficulty, which is good. The problem is that this makes duʿā feel like an emergency signal — the thing you do when the marriage is not working.

Praying in the calm weeks is what keeps the marriage from getting to the emergency in the first place.

Pray for what they are carrying

You know some of what your spouse holds: the pressure at work, the family worry, the thing they have been quiet about. Take it to Allah before you take it to anyone else.

You do not need their permission to make duʿā for them, and you do not need to tell them you did. But telling them, sometimes, does more than you would expect.

Pray together, out loud

The first time can feel awkward. There is no script for it, and many couples have never heard each other pray at length.

Begin small: after one prayer in the day, make two or three duʿā out loud together. It does not need to be eloquent. Allah hears whatever you bring.

Make it a habit, not a moment

Duʿā is like anything else in a marriage: it decays without a rhythm. Pick a time. After Fajr, before sleep, on a particular evening.

Write it down if it helps. The cards and journals we make both include space for exactly this, because in our own experience the intentions you name are the ones that survive.

Space to write it down

Our journals and the conversation cards both include pages for naming the duʿā you make for each other — so the intentions you say out loud do not quietly fade.
